Arms Control and Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration

This FBA brief provides an update on the latest policy developments in the area of control of small arms and light weapons (SALW), weapons and ammunition management (WAM) and some of its implications for policymakers and practitioners within the field of disarmament, demobilization and reintegration of ex-combatants (DDR).

The misuse and uncontrolled proliferation of small arms and light weapons has a profound impact on nations, communities and individuals. It fuels crime and instability, increases the risk of terrorism and contributes to human rights violations.

DDR and SALW control programmes have a pivotal role in reducing the presence of firearms and increasing human security. But action must be taken even in the absence of formal peace agreements, and effective reduction of illegal firearms must be addressed from a holistic perspective.
