Gender and Reconciliation in the New Kenya
Following the election in December 2007, Kenya witnessed intense violence along ethnic lines. This brief argues that a gender perspective in the reconciliation process is fundamental for reaching sustainable peace and reconciliation.
The argument is that gender equality is an essential aspect of reconciliation – and therefore, mainstreaming a gender perspective in all policy areas is instrumental to a successful reconciliation process.
The report analyses – from a gender perspective – the ongoing efforts at promoting reconciliation in the country. The analysis takes into account the role of women in Kenyan society, and the country’s guiding political and legal frameworks and gives a number of recommendations to various actors in the Kenyan context.
