“Knowing the context is key” – trainers at FBA’s peace-building programme in Congo tell their story

https://youtu.be/GDRLp86uV64 The second training session within the realm of FBA’s peace-building programme in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is now being held. In Goma, the 24 selected participants are trained in inclusive peace-building. See our short film where two of the trainers describe the programme.

FBA is commissioned to contribute to Sweden’s strategy for bilateral development cooperation with the DRC 2015-2019. At the core of FBA’s work is the peace-building programme, which was inaugurated in March 2017.

The second training session within the programme is held on 4-9 June in Goma in eastern DRC. The 24 participants have been selected on the basis of their ability to influence the development in the war-torn eastern parts of the country. The third and last training session will be held in September and end with an examination.

A similar programme consisting of three training sessions will be organized for a new group of participants in 2018 and 2019 respectively.

– All training sessions are held in French in Goma, with four Congolese subject matter experts who act as mentors for the participants, and teach alongside of FBA’s trainers. We want to ensure that the programme is adapted to the local context and the challenges the participants are facing, says Magdalena Tham Lindell, project manager at the FBA.

Colombia – A Success Story for Peace?

In 2024, global conflict levels are historically high. One country seemingly defying this trend is Colombia, which continues to take cautious steps towards a more peaceful development after nearly 60 years of conflict. Following the peace agreement with the FARC guerrilla in 2016, negotiations are now underway with the largest remaining guerrilla group, the ELN, as part of President Gustavo Petro's comprehensive peace project, Paz Total – total peace. But how well does the image of Colombia as a peaceful success story hold up, and what lessons can be drawn from the country's peace process?
