Press release: International peace mediation – Sweden’s experiences and future role

On the 17th of September, the anniversary of the murder of Count Folke Bernadotte, the FBA and the Museum of Mediterranean and Near Eastern Antiquities host a seminar on Sweden’s role in international peace mediation. During the day H.R.H. the Crown Princess Victoria will open an exhibition on Count Bernadotte’s work in the Middle East.

Folke Bernadotte became the UN’s first official mediator when he accepted the mission to take on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in 1948. He is considered one of the first initiative takers to international peace operations and his work founded two UN bodies, still active and working for peace in the region.

Mediating in armed conflicts has become a more and more complex task. By working actively within the EU and UN, Sweden has influenced the international agenda for conflict prevention.

Taking off from Count Bernadotte’s lifework a seminar is arranged to discuss Sweden’s long tradition of working for global peace and security, today’s feminist foreign policy and Sweden’s future role in international conflict management.

The panel discussion will feature, among others, H.E. Ms. Ann Dismorr, ambassador and incoming Head of the Foreign Ministry’s desk for the MENA region, H.E. Mr. Kai Eide, Norway’s ambassador to Sweden, Ms. Bitte Hammargren, author and journalist focusing on Turkey and the Middle East, and H.E. Mr. Sven-Olof Petersson, ambassador and chairman of Sipri’s governing board.

Concluding the day, H.R.H. the Crown Princess Victoria inaugurates the exhibition, showing Count Folke Bernadotte’s mission in the Middle East. The exhibition will give the audience an image of the significant contributions to peace and security that Count Bernadotte reached during his short time in the Middle East.

The event takes place at the Museum of Mediterranean and Near Eastern Antiquities, Fredsgatan 2 in Stockholm, starting at 3 p.m. The opening of the exhibition starts at 5 p.m.

FBA’s programme for young peacebuilders in Iraq inaugurated

After decades of war, Iraq needs to be rebuilt. Violent protests against the inability of the Iraqi state to provide its citizens with security and basic social services have rocked the country recently. FBA is now starting a programme for young peacebuilders in Iraq, in order to strengthen them in their non-violent efforts for a positive development.

Insights from the Inside: Women’s Mediation Networks as a Tool for Influencing Peace Processes

Civil society-led networks of women have for decades worked hard to promote peace in conflict areas around the world, and lately, a new wave of women's mediation networks are being established that are led by states or regional organizations. From policy to practice – gender as a perspective

As a trainer, what could be better than to be part of a multinational group with a variety of backgrounds, eagerly wanting to learn new skills? Especially when you get to be the course participant for a change.

I had a dual aim when I recently participated in the Gender Perspective in the EU Common Security and Defence Policy Course, organised by FBA under the auspices of the European Security and Defence College. Besides learning new gender ... Read entire post »

Bureaucratic gender mainstreaming – what’s not to get excited about?

The room is full of representatives from the Jordanian security forces. They are in Sweden on a study trip and have come to FBA to learn more about our work on promoting gender equality in the context of international peace and security generally, and our experience from supporting gender mainstreaming more specifically. I have decided to talk about the conceptual thinking behind much of the work that we do, whether it is with the EU’s Common ... Read entire post »

    A fresh start for Ukraine?

When I first arrived in Kyiv six months ago, I looked out over the city from the hilltop near the office of the EU Advisory Mission for Ukraine (EUAM) where I had just started a job as Coordination and Cooperation Officer. It became immediately clear why the city came to be founded here over 1,000 years ago and why it today is the capital of Ukraine. The mighty Dnepr River splits the city in half, flowing ...
