FBA and NATO
Sweden’s NATO membership brings a new partner for FBA and a new international platform for the agency to contribute to conflict prevention and management, as well as to strengthen the conditions for international security and sustainable peace.

NATO’s core tasks consist of deterrence and defence, crisis prevention and management, and cooperative security. FBA’s mandate relates primarily to the latter two: crisis prevention and management, and cooperative security.
FBA contributes mainly to NATO’s partnership activities, meaning cooperation with countries that are not members of the Alliance but engage with NATO in various forms. These partnerships aim to strengthen security both within and beyond NATO’s territory. Relevant partner countries include Ukraine, Moldova, and Bosnia and Herzegovina – countries where FBA already maintains a presence.
Through its expertise, FBA can contribute to NATO’s comprehensive approach to promoting peace, security, and stability. Thematic areas relevant to cooperation with NATO include democratic governance of the security sector, hybrid threats, and civil–military cooperation.
FBA can also support enhanced coordination between NATO and other regional and international actors with which the agency works, including the EU and the UN. NATO and the EU – which share 23 member states – often highlight each other as particularly close partners.
