Through its expertise, FBA can contribute to NATO’s whole-of-society approach to promote peace and security. Strong and accountable institutions, good leadership and well-functioning cooperation are critical parts of resilient and peaceful societies.

Thematic areas relevant to FBA’s cooperation with NATO include defence and security sector governance, countering hybrid threats, civil–military cooperation, and gender-responsive leadership.

FBA contributes mainly to NATO’s partnership activities, meaning cooperation with countries that are not members of the Alliance but engage with NATO in various formats. These partnerships aim to strengthen security both within and beyond NATO’s territory. Relevant partner countries include Ukraine and Moldova – countries where FBA already maintains a presence.

FBA can also support enhanced coordination between NATO and other regional and international actors with which the agency works, including the EU and the UN. NATO and the EU – which share 23 member states – often highlight each other as particularly close partners.
