FBA's work with Bosnia and Herzegovina

Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) remains governed by the 1995 peace agreement. While it ended the war, the agreement created a complex system that divides power along ethnic lines and complicates reforms. FBA supports the country’s democratic resilience through projects focused on dialogue and reconciliation. EU integration is a key driver of development, while regional security and stability are crucial for Sweden and Europe.

Education and Dialogue Spaces

FBA brings together leaders from different regions of Bosnia and Herzegovina to strengthen local peace initiatives. The work focuses particularly on the education sector, which is central to reconciliation and long-term stability, and on the role of young people and the intergenerational effects of trauma.

Climate Issues and Reconciliation

FBA implements projects with municipal representatives and civil society actors from six municipalities in northwestern Bosnia and Herzegovina, focusing on the challenges of climate change and collaborative solutions. By addressing climate and environmental issues that engage people across ethnic and administrative boundaries, the projects strengthen dialogue, rights-based governance, and the foundations for local reconciliation.

EU Integration

Bosnia and Herzegovina is a candidate country for EU membership. The EU integration process requires comprehensive reforms and serves as a key driver of development in the country.

FBA supports and collaborates with the UN and the EU on issues related to peace and reconciliation to strengthen the national conditions for EU integration.

Bosnia and Herzegovina’s current constitution is an annex to the Dayton Agreement. While the agreement ended the war, it created a complex administrative structure that divides power along ethnic lines rather than ensuring the rights of all citizens.

This complicates the country’s economic and social development and hinders the implementation of the many essential reforms required for EU integration, as these are often blocked by the political system.

FBA’s work in the country promotes dialogue and reconciliation among the country’s ethnic groups to facilitate EU integration and strengthen the nation’s democratic resilience.

Developments in the EU’s neighborhood are of great importance to Sweden, as increased instability could have serious consequences for the whole of Europe.
