Leadership and collaboration

FBA’s experience shows that effective leadership is one of the most important factors for achieving effectiveness, collaboration and sustainable results in organisations working to prevent, manage and resolve conflicts. Effective leadership creates the conditions for individuals, teams and organisations to translate ambitions into action, address complex challenges and achieve long-term results. FBA’s leadership support strengthens partner organisations’ capacity and contributes to lasting change.

FBA’s expertise in leadership is grounded in a deep understanding of the specific demands placed on leaders in organisations operating in conflict-affected and rapidly changing contexts, whether they work in the field or at an organisation’s headquarters. These environments require leaders to provide direction, build trust, coordinate stakeholders and make well-informed decisions under challenging circumstances.

Strong leadership creates the conditions for clear roles, effective decision-making and successful cooperation within and between organisations. It also strengthens organisations’ ability to lead change, manage competing interests and translate values such as gender equality, inclusion and accountability into practice.

FBA supports its partner organisations by strengthening capacity at the organisational, group and individual levels. Its support takes a holistic approach, ensuring that work with individuals and groups also strengthens organisations and contributes to broader organisational development. Through individual coaching, mentoring, advisory support and training, FBA helps both formal and informal leaders develop the capabilities needed to address today’s challenges and achieve sustainable results over time.

In this way, leadership becomes more than just a function within an organisation. It becomes a positive force that strengthens people’s commitment, improves collaboration and creates the conditions for long-term change and peacebuilding.

What we do

The following are examples of FBA’s work in leadership and cooperation.

Supporting EU Accession and Young Civil Servants in Moldova

In Moldova, FBA contributes to strengthening leadership within the Bureau for European Integration, the government body responsible for leading and coordinating the country’s EU accession process. Through support for organisational development, systems leadership and team development, FBA strengthens the organisation’s capacity to drive an extensive process of reform and change.

Through the SPRINT programme, selected young civil servants are equipped to act as agents of change in their professional roles. SPRINT brings together two of FBA’s areas of expertise: leadership and democratic governance. Democratic governance concerns the legitimacy of political authority, both in legal and social terms. At its core, this involves trust in and acceptance of the social contract, as well as efforts to build social cohesion.

In addition to developing a stronger understanding of these principles, SPRINT participants gain practical tools to promote democratic governance. They also deepen their understanding of their role as agents of change, gaining knowledge of systems and leadership, as well as tools to strengthen their leadership capabilities and drive change.

Supporting Multilateral Organizations

At EU level, FBA has contributed to greater awareness of the importance of leadership in civilian crisis management missions by developing policies on leadership and related topics, including safe and inclusive workplace cultures and performance and development reviews. FBA has also helped managers create better conditions for dialogue, collaboration and the achievement of shared objectives.

Through programmes tailored to leaders within the United Nations (UN) and the European Union (EU), FBA also strengthens individual leaders’ and management teams’ ability to communicate effectively, establish a shared sense of direction and develop effective working relationships.
