Nordic Women Mediators call for more women in peace processes

The Nordic Women Mediators have convened in Helsinki, Finland, for their yearly meeting. In a joint statement the participants call for inclusion of women in peace processes worldwide.

The Swedish network of women peace mediators was created in late 2015, by the FBA upon request from the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In turn, the Swedish network is part of a Nordic network of women peace mediators with around 100 members.

The Nordic Women Mediators, NWM, hold annual meetings to discuss topical issues and exchange experiences. The 2017 meeting was held in Helsinki on November 21-22. Among other things, the participants shared new experiences from the peace processes in Colombia, Afghanistan, Syria and Somalia.

Following the meeting the NWM made a joint statement, click here to read. In the statement it is underlined that women are still underrepresented in peace processes around the world and a call is made for strengthened inclusion of women in the international work for peace.

The next annual meeting will be held in autumn 2018 in Denmark.

Colombia – A Success Story for Peace?

In 2024, global conflict levels are historically high. One country seemingly defying this trend is Colombia, which continues to take cautious steps towards a more peaceful development after nearly 60 years of conflict. Following the peace agreement with the FARC guerrilla in 2016, negotiations are now underway with the largest remaining guerrilla group, the ELN, as part of President Gustavo Petro's comprehensive peace project, Paz Total – total peace. But how well does the image of Colombia as a peaceful success story hold up, and what lessons can be drawn from the country's peace process?
