EU Senior Mission Leaders Course

The purpose of this course is to prepare future heads of mission, force commanders and other senior staff for appointments in EU international missions and operations, and ultimately to contribute to successful missions and operations through sound leadership and effective mandate implementation.

The course was designed by the FBA in cooperation with the European External Action Service, and is arranged by the European Security and Defence College with support from the FBA.

Course subjects

•    Lectures on the EU’s common security and defence policy (CSDP), crisis management instruments and essential policy issues such as human rights and gender aspects.
•    Media training and mock television interviews.
•    Lectures and seminars on strategic leadership.
•    Negotiation and mediation exercises.
•    Lectures on mission planning, governing regulations, mandate implementation, and field-specific aspects such as cooperation with EU delegations, other international organizations and host countries.

Target group

The course takes into account the needs of future heads of mission, force commanders and other senior staff in CSDP missions and operations. Participants come from the military, the police or are civilians (for example, diplomats or development professionals).
